Messari's Bot Uprising: New CEO Diran Li Ushers in the AI-First Era (After Some Human Downsizing)

Messari unveiled a classic corporate two-step on Monday: a leadership shuffle paired with a shiny new AI-first manifesto. The tech helm now officially belongs to long-time CTO Diran Li, who takes the CEO throne after interim captain Eric Turner stepped down. Turner, who had been holding the fort since founder Ryan Selkis’s exit in July 2024, called the hand-off “the right one for the company’s next phase,” which is corporate-speak for passing the hot potato.

Naturally, no strategic pivot is complete without a little human collateral. While Messari played coy on the exact body count, it confirmed lopping off roughly 15% of its full-time crew in January 2025—a grim echo of a similar trim back in February 2023. Turner described the day as “difficult” for the team, a sentiment that likely doesn't require an AI sentiment tracker to decode.

Li immediately laid out the new, bot-friendly doctrine: “We’re doubling down on Messari as an AI‑first company serving institutions through research and AI products.” The firm, which started in 2018 as a pure-play crypto research shop, began its AI infusion in 2024 and is now throwing open its data vaults to autonomous agents via the x402 protocol. Now, developers and their silicon-based colleagues can pull and pay for data straight from crypto wallets, bringing Messari's institutional-grade intel to any degen or robot with an internet connection.

On the product front, Messari has already plugged AgentCash into its AI terminal, letting users execute on-chain payments and analysis in a single command line—because who has time for two commands? The platform also deployed sentiment and mind-share tracking, so users can finally quantify the collective hopium or doom surrounding an asset. Its API now serves up over 40,000 assets and offers pay-per-request access through x402, significantly lowering the barrier to entry for both broke developers and their potentially richer AI agents.

Messari isn't solo in this mad dash to merge AI and crypto; it's joining a conga line that includes Core Scientific, Cipher Mining, MARA Holdings, Hut 8, and Galaxy Digital. The broader industry is also getting a taste of the layoff life: OP Labs cut 20% of its staff last week, Block Inc. said goodbye to nearly 4,000 souls last month, and Gemini recently slimmed down by 25%. The bear market diet remains unforgiving.

In essence, Messari is placing a big bet that fusing AI with crypto data plumbing will be the golden ticket for institutional adoption, all while the competitive field gets more crowded and the human headcount gets… less crowded.
