Argentine Onecoin Crew Gets Sentended to a Collective Retirement Plan (Behind Bars)

The Cordoba wing of the Onecoin circus has finally gotten its official review, and spoiler alert: the reviewers were not fans. A baker's dozen of local ringleaders for Argentina's slice of the crypto industry's most legendary pyramid scheme have been awarded some state-sponsored quiet time.

In a poetic bit of scheduling that would make a horror director proud, the 10th Criminal Court of Córdoba chose Friday the 13th to hand out sentences ranging from "don't do it again" to a solid nine-year stint. The crew, perhaps realizing the jig was up, collectively pled guilty, putting a neat bow on this particular chapter of financial fiction.

The judge also kindly suggested the crew reimburse their "investors" to the tune of $82,000. Alejandro Taylor, who apparently skipped the group bill-pay option, won the grand prize: the longest sentence of nine years. The court dryly noted he had previously confessed to owning millions and a fleet of luxury cars, proving that even in a fake crypto scheme, the car count is a crucial KPI.

Most of this entrepreneurial ensemble was rounded up back in 2020, thanks to a complaint from one particularly unlucky "investor" who had parted with about $70,000 in 2018. It turns out sending large sums to internet strangers sometimes ends poorly.

But the legal fun isn't over. A separate case is still meandering through the system, featuring a supporting cast of bank employees accused of playing laundry service for the scam's proceeds and spiriting the funds out of the country. Every good scheme needs a money mover.

Meanwhile, the scheme's original architect and queen, founder Ruja Ignatova, remains the ultimate ghost. She's still enjoying a coveted spot on the FBI's Top Ten Most Wanted list, with a casual $4.5 billion in investor funds having achieved maximum privacy—off the grid and off the books.

Her current location is the world's most expensive game of hide-and-seek. The FBI's official guess is she hopped between countries using a German passport. More exciting, tabloid-tier reports from a Bulgarian investigative outlet claim she was whacked and dumped in the Ionian Sea back in 2018 on orders from a drug lord. The truth, much like the promised returns from Onecoin, remains profoundly, hilariously missing.
