Neo X's 'Quenchation' Update: Because Even Blockchains Get Thirsty for Bug Fixes

Neo X has served up version 0.5.3, a fresh patch for its EVM-compatible chain. The team is politely suggesting—which in node-op language translates to "do it or risk getting forked"—that anyone running v0.5.2 should make the upgrade.

Christened "Quenchation," this release continues Neo X's delightful habit of naming updates like craft beers or indie bands. It arrives on the heels of March's "Polarization" drop, which was the equivalent of giving the chain a full alignment, complete with EIP-4844 blob storage APIs and updated P2P comms to better mimic the latest Ethereum client antics.

This 0.5.3 iteration is a more surgical, maintenance-focused affair, aimed at sweeping up digital dust and tightening a few loose screws. The patch handles some housekeeping: it refreshes sealing proposals when ChangeView events pop up, updates a cryptic error message for a missing etherbase (because "address not found" is so last season), and turns down the log-level volume for missing blob transactions.

It also squashes two specific bugs: one that wrongly included transaction blob sidecars in the OnTransaction callback, and another that fumbled blob error handling for blocks committed by the dBFT consensus. Both fixes tackle niche edge cases in the blob functionality—because in crypto, even the edge cases have edge cases.

For node operators moving from v0.5.2, the upgrade path is refreshingly simple: grab the new binary, gracefully tell your node to take a nap, swap the old file, and hit restart. Notably, and unlike the last rodeo, no extra config tweaks are required—a rare win for the "set it and forget it" crowd.

The full, unabridged release notes, for those who like to read the terms and conditions, are waiting on GitHub.
