Base-Camping the Bitcoin Bag: Coinbase & Apex Tokenize the $3.5T Vault

Coinbase Asset Management is finally moving its Bitcoin Yield Fund onto its own digital backyard, Base, the Ethereum L2 it built. Teaming up with Apex Group—a $3.5 trillion fund-services giant that probably has its own zip code—the fund is getting a shiny new tokenized share class that actually lives on-chain, not in some legacy database.

Apex remains the official keeper of the keys as the transfer agent, ensuring the token's price doesn't wander off from the fund's net asset value. The token uses the ERC-3643 standard, baking in investor checks so only pre-approved wallets can touch it; any unauthorized transaction just fails, swapping paperwork for pure, beautiful code. It’s KYC, but make it crypto.

For now, this on-ramp is only for the non-U.S. crowd, but Coinbase hints a U.S.-flavored token is coming soon. Brett Tejpaul, head of Coinbase Institutional, noted that big money isn't just here for the HODL; it wants "compounded returns"—yield from call-option sales and lending while waiting for the next bull run to do all the heavy lifting.

Coinbase is hardly the only blue-chip name in this tokenization race. BlackRock, Fidelity, and Franklin Templeton are already slicing their funds onto the blockchain, chasing faster settlements and lower fees. The crystal-ball gazing is all over the place: McKinsey predicts a $2 trillion tokenized-asset market by 2030, while BCG and Ripple are dreaming bigger at $18.9 trillion by 2033. Someone’s model is very, very wrong.

Not to be outdone, Apex is going all-in. After buying Tokeny—which helped tokenize over $32 billion in assets—the firm plans to tokenize a cool $100 billion of funds via its T-REX Ledger by mid-2027, spreading across multiple chains because even compliance needs optionality.

In essence, the new on-chain share class for Coinbase’s Bitcoin Yield Fund is about removing friction for the suits, offering a blockchain-native way to earn yield on Bitcoin while the rest of us just stare at charts and pray.
