Crypto Market Hits Snooze: $2.5T Stuck at $70K While Fed Says ‘No Chill’

By our Markets Desk2 min read

The crypto market is taking a nap near a $2.5 trillion market cap, with Bitcoin lazily hovering above $70,000 after an 8% comedown from its latest peak. Ethereum slipped 2.2% to under $2,200, while XRP, BNB, and Solana each dipped about 1% on Friday, moving with all the excitement of a stablecoin.

Investor nerves are being frayed from multiple angles: escalating Middle-East tensions, oil prices hitting new highs, and a Federal Reserve that just served up hotter-than-expected PPI data (0.7% MoM). Jerome Powell basically told the market that rate cuts are on hold until inflation behaves, a classic party-pooper move that historically puts risk assets, crypto included, into a sideways shuffle.

Safe-haven metals had a moment as investors played musical chairs away from risk. Gold rose over 2% back above $4,700 per ounce, while silver jumped nearly 4% to $73 an ounce, proving that in times of panic, people still really like shiny rocks.

Asian equity markets decided to join the pity party. Japan’s Nikkei 225 and China’s Shanghai Composite fell after opening lower, mirroring the recent slump in U.S. tech stocks. Crypto, ever the copycat during global jitters, continues to shadow these high-growth tech indices like a nervous sidekick.

Adding to the serene, do-nothing vibe is today's record $5.7 trillion options expiry – the biggest March "triple-witching" ever. These settlement windows typically turn crypto volatility into a flatline as traders brace for potential spillover. In the past 24 hours, leveraged crypto positions saw $393 million in liquidations, mostly from longs, meaning degens are taking profits and waiting for macro signals that aren't written in Fed-speak.

Stablecoin supply remained utterly unmoved at $312 billion, signaling a distinct lack of fresh, dumb money waiting on the sidelines to FOMO in and spark a rally.

All told, the crypto market is stuck in a waiting room, scrolling through the macro news feed and hoping for the next catalyst to break this dead-flat trend that's about as thrilling as watching paint dry on a cold wallet.
