Grayscale's GHYP ETF Aims to Sneak HYPE Into Your Boomer Account While Perps Party Next Door

Grayscale, in a move that feels like trying to get a rave into a country club, has filed an S-1 with the SEC for a Nasdaq-listed ETF holding Hyperliquid's $HYPE token, ticker GHYP. The filing coyly mentions the trust might stake its bags someday, but for now, it's sitting on its hands with no disclosed fee structure—classic "we'll figure it out later" crypto energy.

This filing puts Grayscale in the same room as Bitwise and 21Shares, which already serve a HYPE exchange-traded product in Europe with a 2.5% total expense ratio. Consider it the institutional, slightly more expensive version of the same degen juice.

$HYPE is the gas for the Hyperliquid DEX, a two-tiered protocol where its core layer runs perpetual futures and spot markets, and a second layer hosts Ethereum-style smart contracts. These "perps"—leveraged, expiry-less, 24/7 trades—are basically the espresso shots of crypto trading, and Hyperliquid is the barista.

Hyperliquid's ambition isn't just crypto anymore; it's hosting perps on traditional assets like oil, gold, and the S&P 500. It's letting traders place bets on boomer assets while the legacy markets are asleep, like a financial after-hours club.

The numbers suggest the "hype" isn't just in the name. Weekly derivatives volume has smashed past $50 billion, with over $6.5 billion traded in just the last 24 hours. This frenzy generated $1.6 million in fees in that single day, utterly humbling the $335k from BNB Chain and the $192k from Bitcoin's entire blockchain—talk about punching above your weight class.

The bullish choir is getting loud. Arthur Hayes, BitMEX co-founder and Maelstrom CIO, argues the platform's fat revenue, real trading depth, and disciplined token supply could launch $HYPE to $150. Currently trading around $40 and up 57% year-to-date, $HYPE is mooning while Bitcoin and Ether are down 20% and 28%, respectively, making it the one kid at the party who actually brought the fun.
