Hawk Tuah, Hawk Crash: An Influencer's Meme-Coin Trauma Takes Flight

Hailey Welsh, the TikTok star known for the "Hawk Tuah" phrase, says the spectacular collapse of the $HAWK memecoin she shilled in December 2024 left her psychologically scarred. In a chat with Channel 5's Andrew Callaghan, Welsh confessed she was essentially a human billboard for a project she couldn't explain if her life depended on it, offering a classic degen warning: think before you ape with your name.

She played nice with an FBI investigation in 2025, which concluded she wasn't the mastermind behind the keyboard. Welsh maintains she never had the keys to the treasury and her technical skills peaked at posting videos, not deploying smart contracts.

Her legal counsel pegged retail losses at around $200,000—a sum Welsh dismissively called "not significant" against the backdrop of the frenzy, which is a bit like saying a small fire isn't significant during a volcano eruption. The real cost was in death threats and a forced digital exile that wrecked her mental state. "People telling me I owe them all this money, and I’m like, ‘I didn’t do this,’" she lamented.

The crypto detective corps wasn't exactly sympathetic. On-chain sleuth ZachXBT fired back, "No one should feel bad for the ‘trauma.’" He pointed out that Crypto Twitter collectively facepalmed and warned her, but she launched anyway, blamed "partners," and ghosted, leaving bagholders to contemplate the void.

$HAWK's chart was a perfect meme-coiner parabola: it launched in December 2024, pumped to a market cap over $490 million in a few hours—because of course it did—then face-planted over 91% the next day to roughly $41 million. At the time of writing, its market cap was clinging to life just above $1 million, officially graduating to rug-pull hall of fame.

A separate investor lawsuit from December 2024 is aiming at the actual launch team and related entities, alleging they peddled unregistered securities; notably, Welsh's name was absent from the legal paperwork, much to the chagrin of those left holding the bag.

The whole episode is a masterclass for influencers eyeing quick crypto clout: the hype rocket can send you to the moon, but the re-entry tends to be abrupt, fiery, and apparently quite traumatic for the passenger.
