NYSE Unleashes the Options Kraken: ETF Caps Vanish Like a Meme Coin's Liquidity

Two NYSE playgrounds, Arca and American, have officially tossed the 25,000-contract limit into the regulatory shredder for options on 11 Bitcoin and Ether ETFs. Both filed three rule tweaks each on March 10, and the SEC waived the usual 30-day snooze period like a bored mod skipping a spam post, so the changes are live. No more waiting for approval, just like no more waiting for a bull run.

These caps were originally slapped on when crypto ETF options first stumbled onto the scene in November 2024, a classic "please don't break the toy" move to curb manipulation and wild swings. With the limits now gone, crypto options are being treated like their grown-up commodity ETF cousins, giving institutions more trading wiggle room than a whale in a shallow pool, promising a likely liquidity boost and smoother exits—hopefully smoother than exiting a rugged project.

The change also unlocks FLEX options for these products, meaning traders can now pick non-standard strikes, custom expirations, and varied exercise styles. Basically, you can now tailor your options contract like you tailor your degenerate trading strategy, instead of just using the standard template.

All 11 affected ETFs include the usual blue-chip suspects: BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC), and ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB), plus the Bitcoin and Ether offerings from Bitwise and Grayscale. It's the full institutional crypto buffet, now with unlimited options.

Earlier, in late July, the SEC had already lifted the 25,000-contract cap for the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust ETF (GBTC), giving it a head start. Meanwhile, Nasdaq’s International Securities Exchange is lobbying to raise IBIT’s limit to a cool 1 million contracts—a number so large it sounds like a fake circulating supply. That proposal is still under SEC review as of the Feb 27 notice, stuck in the bureaucratic queue like a transaction with low gas.
