TAO Subnet Staking Goes Thermonuclear: 833,000% Surge as Bittensor Joins the $1.5B DeFi Frat

The Bittensor subnet ecosystem hasn't just grown; it's undergone a hyperinflationary event that would make a central banker weep. In the last 12 months, total $TAO staked on subnets has rocketed from a humble $74,400 to a staggering $620 million, according to CryptoRank. That's an 833,000% increase, a number so absurd it looks like a degen mistyped their leverage.

The subnet count is keeping pace, expanding from around 80 to over 120. This month's leaderboard saw some serious green candles, with Templar (+171%), Quasar (+146%), NOVA (+66%), Targon (+36%), and iota (+29%) taking the top spots. It's the crypto equivalent of every horse in the race deciding to win.

CoinGecko confirms the party is real, reporting the combined market cap of all Bittensor subnet tokens has now breached the $1.5 billion mark. Even more impressively, every single tracked subnet token was in the green over the past month, a feat that makes Bitcoin's occasional rallies look downright lazy.

Despite this staking frenzy, most $TAO is still chilling on the sidelines like a nervous ape watching a pool party. Mark Jeffrey of Stillcore Capital points out that only 19% of $TAO is currently staked in subnets, with a cozy 48% parked in Root. He muses, “Once the first subnet zooms to $1B+, I expect Root stakers will start rushing into Subnets. Even if NO NEW $TAO is bought, Subnets could 3x or 4x just because of that alone.” In other words, there's a powder keg of capital waiting for a spark.

On the price front, $TAO has been on a rampage since early March, basically ignoring any notion of a correction. The catalyst? Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang name-dropping the Covenant-72B model on the All-In Podcast, which promptly sent the altcoin blasting past $300. A months-long buying spree and a vicious short squeeze have done the rest. It's up over 20% in the past week, outperforming the broader market's snooze-fest, and jumped nearly 11% in the last 24 hours. At press time, it's trading around $339, a level not seen since the heady days of November 2025. Not bad for a Tuesday.
