Solana's AI Agents Are Paying Their Bills: 15 Million Transactions and Zero Tipping Culture

The Solana Foundation is angling its blockchain to be the foundational layer for a new 'agentic' internet—a future where AI bots, not apes, are the ones actually doing the economic work and, presumably, not getting distracted by memecoins.

'AI is not really a vertical. It's a platform shift… affecting everything across every industry, including crypto,' stated Vibhu Norby, the foundation's chief product officer, during a panel at the Digital Asset Summit in New York. He didn't mention if the AI was also taking notes or just calculating its next trade.

The core of this whole operation is payments. Norby dropped the stat that the network has already 'processed 15 million payments onchain from agents,' mostly for machine-to-machine commerce. That's 15 million micro-transactions where no one argued about gas fees in a Telegram group.

'The programmatic aspect of crypto payments is what is making it interesting for agents,' he explained, adding that 'stablecoins are going to be the default thing that agents use to pay for any computational resource.' Finally, a user base that appreciates stability over 1000x gambles.

Norby thinks this could completely reshape how the internet makes money. 'Agentic payments are probably going to change the entire way that the internet is monetized,' he said, highlighting the ability to handle sub-cent, pay-per-use transactions that legacy finance systems can't touch without having a meltdown.

The foundation claims Solana's speed-obsessed architecture gives it a leg up. 'Agents are cold, calculated machines… they don’t subscribe to crypto religiosity,' Norby joked. 'If you ask an agent what’s the best way to pay for something with crypto, most of the time, Solana is showing up at the top.' Probably because it ran the numbers and saw the cheapest, fastest route.

At the same time, progress in AI is lowering the bar for developers, making it simpler for both humans and their soon-to-be robot overlords to build stuff. In reaction, Solana devs are crafting tools specifically for AI systems.

'What agents like is APIs and documentation and skills,' Norby noted, pointing to projects like machine-readable 'skill' files and AI-first developer platforms. Basically, they want a clean, well-lit workspace, not a chaotic Discord full of alpha calls.

Peering into the crystal ball, Norby forecasts a massive behavioral change: 'The default way people will interact with crypto is going to be through their agent… 95 to 99% of all transactions… will be coming from LLMs.' Get ready for a future where your biggest on-chain activity is approving your AI's gas spend.
