SBI & Sony Bet $63M on Startale's Quest to Build a Japanese Crypto SuperApp

Startale Group just bagged a hefty $63 million Series A war chest – a cool $50 million from the financial giant SBI Group and an initial $13 million tranche from the Sony Innovation Fund that landed back in January. The Singapore-based, Japan-focused builder is crafting blockchain plumbing for everyone from suits to degens.

Its arsenal of products reads like a crypto wishlist:

  • Strium, a blockchain designed for tokenizing securities and other real-world assets (RWAs);
  • JPYSC, a yen-pegged stablecoin for those who like their volatility on the side;
  • USDSC, a dollar-pegged stablecoin for everyone else;
  • The Startale app, a consumer-facing gateway that runs on the Sony-backed layer-2, Soneium.

This fresh pile of capital is getting sprayed across the entire operation. The plan is to scale Strium for serious tokenized security and RWA action, give the JPYSC and USDSC stablecoins a major adoption push, and evolve the Startale app into a full-blown "SuperApp" for managing assets, making payments, and accessing on-chain services. CEO Sota Watanabe noted the funds will also fuel tokenized Japanese equities and further yen-stablecoin uptake this year, because why have one moon mission when you can have several?

This funding round essentially welds together Startale's two powerhouse backers: SBI, which has been co-building on Strium and JPYSC, and Sony, which is backing the play both through its investment arm and by providing the Soneium network rails.

The cash infusion arrives just as Japan is actively test-driving ways to bridge its legacy financial systems with blockchain tech. Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama has gone on record with full-throated support for plugging crypto trading directly into the nation's stock exchanges, a move that would make traditional finance and crypto finally stop giving each other the side-eye.
