USDT0 Drops the Beat: Tempo Becomes the Latest Chain in the 'Bridge-Free Club'
USDT0, Tether's omnichain shadow clone, has just landed on Tempo, a payments-focused Layer 1 co-built by Stripe and Paradigm. This marks deployment number twenty-three for the protocol, proving that when it comes to chains, USDT0 collects them like a degen collects worthless NFTs.
Lorenzo R., a USDT0 co-founder, praised Tempo for its "predictable settlement, stable fee dynamics, and infrastructure that works at scale." He then delivered the classic line, noting that with this move, "dollar liquidity can move quickly, freely, and predictably across every chain that matters." Because nothing says freedom like a fully centralized stablecoin spreading everywhere.
These tokens are minted via LayerZero's Omnichain Fungible Token standard and are, of course, backed 1:1 by the original USDT. They use a lock-and-mint/burn mechanism to hop between networks "bridgelessly," which is the crypto equivalent of teleportation, but with more smart contract risk.
Back in February, Tether made a strategic investment in LayerZero Labs, because vertical integration isn't just for oil barons. USDT0 itself launched early last year and managed to rack up over $70 billion in cumulative transaction volume within twelve months, a number so large it almost makes you forget about the ongoing CFTC investigation.
The asset is already live on Ethereum, all the major Layer 2s, and a smattering of newer chains including Monad, HyperLiquid, Bitcoin scaling layers Corn and Rootstock, and USDT-obsessed networks like Stable and Plasma. At this rate, USDT0 will soon be on your toaster.
Active testing on Tempo seems to have kicked off six days ago with some test transactions, even though the official TIP-20 token contract was deployed back on February 18. In crypto, "testing" often just means sending a few bucks and hoping nothing explodes.
Tempo is built specifically for stablecoin usage and features an enshrined automated market maker for stablecoin swaps at the protocol level. Think of it as a dedicated highway for stablecoins, with built-in toll booths that don't randomly spike to 50 bucks.
Nischay Upadhyayula, GTM of Tempo, commented: "As a payments-first blockchain, Tempo was built for environments where capital needs to move quickly and predictably. USDT0 brings unified USDT liquidity directly into that environment, giving builders access to dollar liquidity without managing fragmented pools or bridges." Or, in plain English: builders can now focus on building rug pulls instead of managing liquidity.
