Baseball's veMVPs Get a Bitcoin Bonus: Mezo Pitches 2.25% of Supply to Aerodrome's Locked-and-Loaded Crew

By our DeFi Desk2 min read

Mezo, a Bitcoin-native lending protocol that’s basically trying to teach your cold storage wallet some new tricks, is teaming up with Aerodrome Finance. The goal? To become the main liquidity pit stop for its MEZO token and its Bitcoin-backed stablecoin, MUSD, on the Base network. Think of it as a high-stakes carpool lane for your digital assets.

The juicy part of this deal carves out a hefty 2.25% of the total MEZO token supply, serving it up on a platter to the degens locked into Aerodrome's vote-escrow (veAERO) system. The play here is simple: bribe the liquidity with tokens, watch the liquidity flow into MEZO trading pairs, and hope the activity chart starts looking less like a flatline and more like a heart monitor after a double espresso.

Aerodrome, built by the same brains behind Optimism, is already a liquidity kingpin on Base. This partnership is essentially a bridge, connecting Base's bustling DeFi metropolis with the newer, Bitcoin-maximalist suburbs popping up next door, as devs furiously try to copy-paste Ethereum's DeFi playbook onto Bitcoin’s more stubborn ledger.

So what does Mezo actually do? It lets users put their precious Bitcoin to work as collateral for loans—because sometimes you need fiat for a Lambo without actually selling your sats. The protocol claims it's already issued over 2,000 loans and helped shepherd roughly $23 million in Bitcoin-denominated assets on their migration from the expensive Ethereum neighborhood.

This isn't just a one-off experiment. Bitcoin-based DeFi activity has been picking up steam since 2024, with new platforms like Lombard and Hashi entering the arena to offer the holy trinity of crypto: lending, borrowing, and yield farming strategies, all on the original blockchain. The old guard is finally getting some DeFi drip.
