From 'Extreme Fear' to 'Okay Maybe Fine': Bitcoin's Relief Rally Shows Up After $14B Options Expiry

By our Markets Desk2 min read

The broader crypto market has been on a wild ride, with Strait of Hormuz tensions throwing sentiment into a blender and triggering some truly chaotic price swings. Bitcoin led the chaos, repeatedly failing to find its footing as macro uncertainty had everyone reaching for the risk-off button. But here's the thing – it wasn't demand that was missing. It was positioning doing the dirty work.

Traders had clustered around the $75,000 max-pain level into the March 27th expiry, essentially pinning prices through sheer derivative gravity. The market looked weak, but it was more like a coiled spring being held down. Once roughly $14 billion in Options expired, that pressure started to lift. Hedging flows faded, real demand started peeking out, and suddenly we had ourselves a rebound.

Now the market is testing whether this move has actual legs or is just positioning doing its thing. Short covering is definitely contributing – traders who bet on downside are unwinding, which can lift prices fast but doesn't always have depth. If Open Interest rebuilds unevenly and spot demand disappears, this rally stays fragile. But if buyers keep stepping in and positions rebuild more evenly, we might actually be building something sustainable.

The sentiment picture tells the story. The Fear Index crashed into 'Extreme Fear' territory at 13 on March 27th after hovering near 10 earlier – basically everyone who was going to sell had already sold. When selling gets that exhausted, even tiny improvements can trigger a sharp bid return. And improve they did. Institutional demand showed up with roughly $1.2 billion in ETF inflows across four consecutive weeks in March.

So there you have it. Exhausted sellers met steady institutional demand, and Bitcoin decided maybe doom isn't the move after all.
