Finally, a Seatbelt for the Crypto Rollercoaster: Hashdex's NCIQ ETF Gets Options

Options on Hashdex's NCIQ ETF went live on Nasdaq on Monday, giving investors a way to hedge, generate income and manage risk on a product that offers diversified crypto exposure—not just bitcoin or ether—for the first time. Because apparently, the crypto market decided that "don't invest more than you can lose" wasn't cutting it as risk management.

For over a year, trading Hashdex's diversified crypto ETF was like riding an amusement park ride without seatbelts. Investors could speculate on gains, but if the market took a nosedive, the only protection available was pretending you hadn't checked the charts that day. Very sophisticated.

That's now changed. Well, technically the seatbelt exists now. Whether anyone actually buckles up is a different story.

NCIQ, which debuted in February 2025, provides exposure to a broad, market-cap-weighted basket of digital assets based on the Nasdaq CME Crypto Index. As of Monday, it held bitcoin, ether, XRP, solana, ADA, chainlink and stellar, along with the U.S. dollar and other assets. The fund has nearly $100 million in assets under management. Advisers couldn't set up strategies to earn extra income from the ETF, or protect against big losses, without actually selling the investment. Imagine trying to short your own portfolio while still believing in the project. Leadership had questions.

These kinds of risk-management tools are standard for institutions and often a prerequisite for them to invest at scale. It's like how you probably shouldn't drive a car without brakes, but in crypto, people have been doing burners on the highway for years.
