Tortoise Outlasts Another Cycle: Jonathan (194) Still Alive While JONATHAN Meme Coin Gets Absolutely Rugged
An April Fool's Day joke about the death of Jonathan, the world's oldest living land mammal at suspected 194 years old, caused the internet to collectively lose its mind on Wednesday. The hoax, posted by someone claiming to be the tortoise's veterinarian, racked up over 1.7 million views before being thoroughly debunked. The gremlin behind it all later confirmed it was just a bit—essentially a social experiment about which crypto accounts would repost breaking "news" without checking the timeline. Turns out, a lot of them.
Jonathan remains alive and absolutely thriving on St. Helena, where the island's governor dropped a proof-of-life photo of the ancient reptile casually munching on some leaves. "Yes, he's still alive. Did anyone send crypto?" the account posted after the hoax was uncovered, along with a Solana contract address for a freshly minted JONATHAN meme coin. Legend has it Jonathan was mid-meditate when this all went down and couldn't even be bothered.
The Solana-based token, created back in July 2025, had been collecting dust around a $40,000 market cap for most of its existence—basically a sleeping giant, except the giant was a very old reptile and nobody actually cared. But when the fake death news spread, the token briefly pumped to $380,000 on Thursday before promptly retracing all gains back to around $50,000. For those counting at home, that's a 25% bounce followed by a swift return to the realm of irrelevance. Classic meme coin behavior, really.
The two most profitable traders walked away with less than $2,500 each from this whole saga. The actual biggest winner had exited their position two days before the hoax dropped—either they had insider information, or they just got lucky. Either way, that's some impeccable timing that would make even the most seasoned degen jealous.
Meanwhile, Bitcoin pushed toward $70,000 and CoinShares started trading on Nasdaq under ticker CSHR with a $1.2 billion valuation. But in the grand scheme of things, the only metric that truly matters this week is that Jonathan the tortoise is still out here, casually HODLing through another market cycle while we apes panic overCharts.
