Whale Dumps $225K of ADA for 4.14M NIGHT, Calls It 'Legendary Work' — Community Has Thoughts

A Cardano whale apparently decided Monday that the midnight oil wasn't going to burn itself, swapping 940,000 ADA tokens for 4.14 million NIGHT tokens mere hours after the Midnight sidechain went live on mainnet. Because when a blockchain launches a privacy sidechain, nothing says "I'm bullish" quite like a sizable position in the new kid on the block.

The transaction, flagged by Midnight enthusiast Plutus, shows wallet "stake1uxua…q9pm" exchanging 940,000 ADA worth $225,600 at current market prices for 4.14 million NIGHT tokens on March 29. The whale fragmented this into five separate transactions spanning just three minutes, because nothing screams "sophisticated investor" like splitting your DeFi moves into bite-sized chunks. The opening act involved 173,000 ADA for 762,260 NIGHT, followed by 99,620 NIGHT, 964,980 NIGHT, 2.29 million NIGHT, and 26,700 NIGHT between 5:34 pm and 5:37 pm UTC. Efficiency at its finest — this whale clearly wasn't about to let gas fees catch them slacking.

Post-swap, the wallet now holds 4.43 million NIGHT, suggesting the whale wasn't exactly starting from zero. Apparently this was less "initial investment" and more "aggressive top-up." The same wallet has also accumulated 57,727 ADA, worth over $14,000 — because apparently this whale plays both sides of the sandbox and refuses to pick a favorite.

The move has divided the Cardano faithful like a governance proposal nobody asked to vote on. Plutus called the Midnight purchase "nicely played" and "legendary work," which in crypto terms is basically a standing ovation. But not everyone's popping champagne. One user expressed something between disgust and disappointment that anyone would celebrate someone allegedly "dumping" Cardano for NIGHT — a take that would be valid if these tokens weren't living in the same ecosystem. Midnight was built to complement ADA, not replace it. Charles Hoskinson has made it abundantly clear that Midnight will power Cardano's next chapter, driving DeFi adoption and bringing the network up to speed with its competitors. They're basically roommates, not rivals.

Midnight launched on mainnet Monday, bringing what it calls fourth-generation blockchain architecture to the table — because apparently we're at a point where we need to clarify which generation we're living in. The privacy-focused sidechain aims to let privacy and transparency coexist on-chain through selective disclosure and data protection. In a world where your on-chain activity is basically a digital speeding ticket, having an option to hit the privacy button sounds almost refreshing.

The launch follows last year's airdrop that distributed 24 billion NIGHT tokens to 37 million wallets across eight blockchains, including Bitcoin and
