Thunder Dragon Gets Cold Feet? Bhutan Unloads $25M Bitcoin
The Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan is at it again. According to onchain data from Arkham, the Bhutanese government recently transferred approximately 374.9 Bitcoin, worth around $25.2 million, to an unlabeled address starting with "bc1q0." Because nothing says "we're totally not selling" like a mysterious bc1 address that screams "ask no questions."
Analysts have noticed this particular address has a history of sending Bitcoin acquired from Bhutan to institutional players like Galaxy Digital. Naturally, this has sparked speculation that the government might be offloading some of its stash—but the official word on the transfer's purpose is still MIA. Cue the conspiracy theories.
Bhutanese wallets have been busy this week. Total outflows have exceeded 1,000 BTC. Previous moves included 519.7 BTC on March 25th and 123.7 BTC on March 27th, with addresses linked to QCP Capital also in the mix. That's a whole lot of sats going walkabout in a single week.
As for the royal treasury? Bhutan currently holds approximately 3,954 BTC, valued at roughly $263.9 million. That's quite a drop from their October 2024 peak of around 13,000 BTC. Ouch. Someone's been eating less rice and selling more Bitcoin.
Unlike most nations stacking sats, Bhutan built its Bitcoin reserves the old-fashioned way—hydroelectric mining, not confiscation. But with recent speculation that new production has slowed, it looks like the Thunder Dragon might be tapping into its hodlings. Because when the mining gets tough, the tough start spending.
