Much Commodity, Very Regulation: Shiba Inu's Bureaucratic Glow-Up Nobody Ordered

So here's a plot twist even the most degened trader didn't see coming. The SEC and CFTC dropped a joint classification framework, and Shiba Inu ended up on the same list as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP. Yes, you read that right. The token that started as a Dogecoin knockoff is now officially a digital commodity, apparently. Someone alert the ShibArmy—we've got regulatory legitimacy in the chat.

Analyst VirtualBacon broke down the logic: to qualify as a commodity, tokens typically power blockchains using proof-of-work or proof-of-stake systems. We're talking validators, gas fees, the whole infrastructure shebang. The core stuff keeping networks running. Bitcoin checks those boxes. Ethereum checks those boxes. And apparently, SHIB does too now, which raises a few eyebrows and possibly some red flags in the comments section.

The SEC did note in February 2025 that meme coins resemble digital collectibles more than traditional investments. But Shiba Inu has been around the block—similar to Dogecoin—and has developed a layer-2 ecosystem plus staking features. Regulators apparently decided that's enough to graduate SHIB from "internet joke" to "network backbone." The metamorphosis is complete: from Woof to wholesome infrastructure.

VirtualBacon isn't entirely sold on the classification, though. "I honestly don't know why Shiba Inu is not a digital collectible," he said. "But when you look at this list, any crypto that's a layer one blockchain, similar to proof-of-work or proof-of-stake, runs smart contracts and DeFi—probably will fit into digital commodities." Fair enough, but the man doth protest with good reason.

Here's the thing: SHIB's price still moves on Musk tweets and community hype, which sounds a lot like collectible behavior. Token burns? Marketing scarcity plays, not fundamental utility. So the analyst has a point—SHIB might be a square peg in a round hole, or more accurately, a very good boy wearing a tie to a dog show.

The mismatch highlights just how early and flexible this classification game still is. Not every asset fits neatly into one box. But hey, congrats SHIB holders, your meme coin just got a bureaucratic promotion. Time to update those LinkedIn profiles.
