Bitcoin's Bear Flag Drama: $76K Is the Magic Number, or We Visit $52.5K (Yikes)

Bitcoin's range-bound trading between $60,000 and $73,000 is actually kind of impressive when you consider the backdrop: Brent crude oil at levels we haven't seen since 2008, a lovely little hot war involving the US, Israel and Iran, and the S&P 500 down nearly 4% year-to-date. Despite all that, buyers keep stepping in at $60,000. Brave souls, those buyers.

Bitcoin's daily chart is showing some concerning patterns. A bearish continuation setup confirmed on Jan. 20 when BTC dipped to $60,014, and there's a bear flag currently in play. Every attempt to rally to the flag's overhead trendline has been rejected since Feb. 8. Technical analysis suggests bulls need a sustained move above $76,000 to turn this thing around—specifically, a rally followed by a 2- to 3-day consecutive candle close above that level.

Chartered market technician Aksel Kibar isn't exactly painting a rosy picture. His analysis from March 18 suggests a breakdown below the lower boundary could target $52,500. Ouch.

On the demand side, things aren't exactly electric. Bitcoin's aggregated open interest remains stuck below $20 billion—a level last seen Feb. 2 when BTC was lounging near $79,000. Traders seem to treat negative funding rates as buying opportunities, but their enthusiasm disappears when price rallies approach that bear flag resistance.
