Leap Wallet Takes Its Final Leap: Cosmos Users Scramble to Export Seeds Before May Deadline

Leap Wallet will permanently shut down all products on May 28, 2026, closing out a four-year run as one of the Cosmos ecosystem's most popular non-custodial wallets. The sunset affects browser extensions, mobile apps, Compass Wallet, Swapfast, and Leap's Cosmos Hub validator. Users have roughly eight weeks to export recovery phrases and migrate to alternatives. In crypto terms, that's approximately one governance vote and two Twitter feuds worth of time to move your life savings to a different piece of software.

Founded in 2022, Leap Wallet quickly became the go-to choice for Cosmos users farming airdrops on chains like Celestia (TIA), Cosmos Hub (ATOM), and Osmosis (OSMO). The project raised $3.2 million from CoinFund and Pantera Capital and expanded to support over 100 chains, including EVM, Solana, and Sui networks. At its peak, the wallet served hundreds of thousands of users globally—mostly degens who kept their seed phrases on sticky notes behind their monitors, but who's counting.

"This decision was not made lightly," the team said in a statement. They affirmed continued support for crypto's long-term future, though a specific reason for the closure was not disclosed. Apparently even in crypto, some things remain a mystery, like why people buy $PEPE at the top and why projects choose to die in the spring rather than face another bear market summer.

Because Leap is non-custodial, all funds remain on the blockchain. Users must export their recovery phrases or private keys before May 28 and import them into wallets like Keplr, MetaMask, Phantom, or Rabby. No asset transfers are necessary—addresses and balances carry over automatically. Think of it as moving apartments but keeping your furniture. The furniture being your life savings. In a drawer. That someone else made. Good thing it's non-custodial, because "your keys, your coins" only helps if you actually have the keys.

Users who staked ATOM with Leap's validator face a more urgent timeline. The validator will stop earning rewards after shutdown. Redelegation avoids the 21-day unbonding period, which would leave tokens locked without yield. So if you're one of those "I'll deal with it later" types, congratulations—you now have to deal with it immediately. The blockchain doesn't accept late homework, and neither do your passive income goals.

Leap's closure landed during a brutal stretch for crypto projects. Within the same week, Dmail shut down after five years, Yupp AI discontinued operations, and Magic Eden wallet ceased functioning. The $285 million Drift Protocol exploit on Solana added
