Peace Premium: Bitcoin Pumps to 3-Week High as Trump Signals Iran War End

By our Markets Desk2 min read

Bitcoin surged to a three-week high above $72,000 as President Trump signaled the potential end of the US-Iran war, sending ripples through both traditional and crypto markets. Because nothing gets degens clicking faster than a geopolitical powder keg cooling off—or at least getting a two-week timeout.

The leading cryptocurrency jumped more than 5% in the past 24 hours, currently trading around $71,700. BTC hit a peak of $72,732 from a low of $67,740, with trading volume increasing by 34%. That's a $5,000 swing for those keeping score at home—roughly the cost of a used Honda Civic or one month's rent in a crypto-friendly city.

The geopolitical breakthrough came after the US and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire. In a Truth Social post on April 8, Trump softened his earlier aggressive rhetoric toward Iran, stating the US would be "helping with the traffic buildup" in the Strait of Hormuz while Iran can "start reconstruction." Trump called it "A big day for World Peace" and the "Golden Age of the Middle East." Nothing says golden age like a two-week ceasefire and rebuilding infrastructure, but hey, we'll take it.

Oil prices plunged more than 15% to around $95 per barrel as Iran agreed to open the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, gold and silver prices jumped as the US dollar index (DXY) hit a four-week low below 99. When oil bleeds, Bitcoin feeds—classic risk-on behavior, except this time there's actually a reason beyond "Elon tweeted a frog."

The broader crypto market rebounded nearly 5% as oil prices tumbled, easing volatility and improving risk sentiment. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index rebounded to 17. At the time of writing, total BTC futures open interest jumped almost 6% to $51.45 billion, signaling bullish sentiment among derivatives traders. The Fear & Greed Index at 17 is still technically "Extreme Fear" territory, but hey, 17 is basically "Cautiously Optimistic" when you're used to single digits.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed negotiations would continue, with in-person talks potentially being arranged. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu noted that the two-week ceasefire does not include Hezbollah in Lebanon. Because nothing says "full peace deal" like a regional exclusion clause. But for now, the peace premium is priced in—and so is the uncertainty.
