Iran's Bright Idea: Pay Bitcoin to Sail Through the World's Most Strategic Chokepoint
Iran is reportedly exploring Bitcoin as payment for transit through the Strait of Hormuz, the critical oil shipping route that sees roughly 20% of global oil consumption pass through its waters.
Hamid Hosseini, spokesperson for the Iranian Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Products Association, confirmed the proposal, stating the transit tariff would be set at $1 per barrel, with payments accepted in all cryptocurrencies—including Bitcoin.
Following the news, Bitcoin saw a modest bump, currently trading around $72,600.
More details to follow as they emerge.
