Exodus Pay Promises You Can Finally Spend Your Crypto Without Pretending It's for Groceries
Exodus has rolled out Exodus Pay, a feature allowing users to spend crypto directly from its self-custodial wallet app. The launch is currently limited to five U.S. states: Nebraska, Texas, Florida, New York, and California. Because nothing says "mainstream adoption" quite like launching in Nebraska first—sorry, the rest of you degens will have to wait your turn.
The Omaha-based firm, which listed its stock on the New York Stock Exchange in 2024, positions the service as an alternative to centralized payment apps. "Most payment apps are third parties that hold your funds for you," Exodus co-founder and CEO JP Richardson told Decrypt. "That means they can freeze your account, reverse transactions, and decide what you're allowed to buy." Imagine Venmo with a god complex, but worse—because at least your bank only judges you silently.
Exodus says it can't do any of that because users remain in control of their funds at all times. The service works within the existing wallet app and allows users to spend USD-backed stablecoins like USDC, or Bitcoin at merchants that accept Visa or Apple Pay. Finally, a use case for your Bitcoin that doesn't involve explaining to your grandmother why you bought a pizza with digital gold worth more than the restaurant itself.
"The problem with self-custody until now has been the friction. Seed phrases, complicated networks—most self-custody consumer experiences aren't built for someone who just wants to pay for groceries or send friends money," Richardson said. Translation: self-custody has been great for paranoid cypherpunks and terrible for anyone who just wants to buy milk without writing down 24 words on a napkin they might lose.
To encourage adoption, Exodus will subsidize network fees and allow transfers using phone numbers. The company plans to expand nationwide over the next several weeks. Nothing says "we're serious about this" quite like eating gas fees yourself—though let's see how long that generosity lasts when mempool madness kicks in.
"By mid-April, everyone in America will have Exodus Pay in their app," Richardson said. Existing users will receive the feature as an automatic update. So mark your calendars, set your alerts, and prepare for the moment your grandma finally asks why there's a new button in her wallet app that she definitely didn't ask for.
