YouTube's 'Make a Deepfake of Yourself' Button Is Here—Because Your Legal Team Will Love That
Google just dropped a new AI tool on YouTube Shorts that lets creators generate videos starring their very own digital avatar. The feature, dubbed "Make a video with my avatar," is rolling out through the YouTube app and YouTube Create, powered by Google's Veo 3.1 video model. Think of it as having a clone that never sleeps, never complains about demonetization, and definitely won't unionize.
Starting Wednesday, content creators can generate clips up to about eight seconds long—string a few together for something longer. Only the account holder can use their likeness, and you need to be at least 18 with an actual YouTube channel to play. It's like getting a VIP pass to the uncanny valley, except the bouncer wants to see your subscriber count first.
The launch is hitting mobile globally, minus Europe, with broader availability coming in the next few days. And yes, every AI-generated clip gets a nice disclosure and digital watermark, so viewers know they're watching a clone, not the real deal. Nothing says "trust us, we're transparent" like a tiny badge that most people will ignore anyway.
Previously created videos stick around unless manually removed, but you can nuke your avatar settings anytime. Your digital twin is now basically the crypto token nobody asked for—impossible to fully delete and permanently living on someone else's servers.
This rollout fits into YouTube's bigger 2026 creator roadmap. Back in January, CEO Neal Mohan outlined plans to expand AI-powered creation tools, including features that let creators produce Shorts using their own likeness. "AI will act as a bridge between curiosity and understanding," he wrote. Translation: we found a way to let you clone yourself without the messiness of actual cloning.
The move puts YouTube in a crowded space alongside Synthesia, ElevenLabs, and HeyGen—all offering AI presenter platforms. Meanwhile, OpenAI quietly killed Sora after just six months, reportedly burning through $15 million daily on the app. Sora went from "this will change everything" to "LOL nice try" faster than most altcoin pump-and-dumps.
So there you have it. Your digital twin is now a YouTube feature. Progress, apparently. The future is here, and it has a Terms of Service agreement.
