Doubt the Dip: OKX CEO Star Xu Puts CZ's 'Sell House for Bitcoin' Story Under the Microscope

OKX CEO Star Xu has publicly challenged Binance founder Changpeng Zhao's widely shared story about selling an apartment to buy Bitcoin at $400.

In remarks following the release of CZ's new book, Xu questioned key details of the narrative. He asked where the initial down payment came from and challenged who actually owned the property. Xu suggested the house may have belonged to CZ's in-laws rather than CZ himself, raising questions about family involvement.

The OKX CEO also revisited older disputes tied to OKCoin, noting that he had previously avoided discussing these matters publicly. However, he stated the recently published book compelled him to respond, describing it as containing falsehoods about his own history.

Separately, Star Xu raised questions about CZ's marital status, citing inconsistencies in public statements. He referenced a letter reportedly submitted by CZ's wife referring to them as husband and wife, while noting CZ has described the relationship differently in interviews and his book. Xu asked whether a divorce had occurred and if assets were divided legally.

Xu added he would issue a public apology if CZ provided a signed divorce agreement, otherwise claiming divorce would amount to public misrepresentation.

The dispute also extends to a 2015 controversy involving a contract linked to early Bitcoin investor Roger Ver. During CZ's tenure at OKCoin, allegations emerged about contract falsification. CZ addressed the episode in his book, describing it as a disagreement over leadership and vision. Star Xu rejected that account, referencing archived materials and a notarized video shared online years ago. Xu also disputed CZ's earlier explanation that his QQ account may have been accessed by another employee, maintaining the evidence remains unchanged.
