Freedom of Money, Freedom from Matrimony: CZ Offers Star Xu a $1B Divorce Bet

Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao confirmed he's officially divorced and, because apparently divorce papers alone weren't spicy enough, threw down a $1 billion bet to prove it. Because when you're a crypto billionaire, settling personal matters apparently requires stakes that could fund a small country's GDP. The man went from HODLing Bitcoin to HODLing a separation agreement, and apparently both came with maximum leverage.

The challenge came after OKX founder Star Xu decided to play internet detective, questioning CZ's marital status and sparking another round in a feud that's been simmering since 2014. Yes, you read that right—these two have been beefing longer than most altcoins have existed. Some rivalries in crypto are like Bitcoin: they just keep running, block after block, with no end in sight.

"You can apologize now. I am officially divorced," CZ wrote on social media, presumably while dodging the irony of posting private matters publicly to prove they're private. "I won't post any legal docs online, as I respect privacy of my ex-wife, and I appreciate the time we spent together." Classic CZ—sharing his divorce publicly to prove he's being discreet. It's like wearing a t-shirt that says "I'm not wearing a t-shirt."

Xu had demanded proof, saying he'd publicly apologize if CZ could present a signed divorce agreement. If not, Xu argued, it would amount to public misrepresentation. Apparently in the crypto world, marital status has become a form of on-chain verification. We really are past the point of no return.

CZ's response? A permanent $1 billion wager. Not a token. Not a meme coin. One billion actual USD, which in crypto terms is basically CZ saying "I have nothing to hide, but I'll also put my money where my mouth is because apparently my mouth needs a $1B microphone." "I am happy to bet $1 billion USD that: I am officially divorced (way before today)," CZ added, giving Xu a 24-hour window to respond—and noting that silence would reveal who'd been misleading the public. Nothing says "trust me, I'm credible" like wagering more than most startups are worth on a personal matter.

The dispute is the latest chapter in a rivalry stretching back over a decade. CZ served as CTO at OKCoin, OKX's predecessor, before the two parted ways over equity disputes, a Bitcoin.com domain
