TAO Tanks 9% After Major Operator Calls It 'Decentralization Theater' and Walks
Bittensor (TAO) had a rough day, sinking over 9% in 24 hours to around $292. The dip made TAO the worst-performing top-100 cryptocurrency despite the broader market ticking up slightly. While everyone else was green, TAO was firmly in the red. If TAO were a meme coin, we'd say "wen moon," but this is an AI layer, so we say "wen singularity gone wrong?"
The culprit? A high-profile departure. Covenant AI announced it's exiting the Bittensor network, taking its three subnets—Templar (SN3), Basilica (SN39), and Grail (SN81)—with it. Covenant AI was one of Bittensor's more prominent contributors, so this wasn't some random airdrop farmer jumping ship. This was like your most active Discord mod rage-quitting and taking the entire moderation team with them.
Founder Sam Dare didn't pull punches in the exit memo. He accused Bittensor co-founder Jacob Steeves of centralized control over what is marketed as a decentralized network. The specific gripes: suspended emissions to Covenant's subnets, stripped moderation access to its own community channels, unilaterally deprecated infrastructure, and strategically timed token sales that applied economic pressure. In crypto terms, that's a "rug pull but make it subtle."
'Bittensor operates a triumvirate structure, three individuals who manage the multisig for network upgrades, presented to the community as distributed governance,' Dare wrote. 'It is not. It is decentralization theatre.' You almost respect the honesty. Most projects dress up their centralized multisig as "community governed" while the devs nod along. At least Bittensor got called out by name.
The irony isn't lost on anyone. Covenant AI's Covenant-72B model was a major rally trigger for TAO, especially after NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang name-dropped it on the All-In Podcast. Now that same player is walking away. Picture watching a movie with the lead actor walking out during the climax. That's basically TAO holders right now.
For what it's worth, Covenant AI says it's keeping its research team, existing work, and models. New project announcements are 'coming soon,' so this exit might just be a relaunch in disguise. "We're leaving but also not really leaving, stay tuned for our inevitable rebrand."
Whether this sparks a broader governance reckoning within Bittensor remains to be seen. But if you thought the governance drama was over, I've got a bridge to sell you.
