Deribit's $2.2B Expiry Gala: Bitcoin and Ethereum Prepare to Face the Music
Buckle up, degens. Over $2.2 billion in crypto options are set to expire on Deribit this Friday, and Bitcoin is once again stealing the show with $1.9 billion under its belt while Ethereum shows up with a modest $328 million contribution. Ethereum tried to bring snacks to a potluck; Bitcoin brought the main course.
Options expiries are basically the crypto equivalent of that moment when everyone's Uber arrives at the same time — chaos, regrouping, and a lot of nervous checking of apps. As contracts settle, traders scramble to close, roll, or watch their positions evaporate into the digital ether. Market makers scramble to adjust their hedges, which tends to amplify volatility around expiry like nobody's business.
Bitcoin's max pain sits at $69,000 — the strike price where the most contracts expire worthless and retail traders update their Twitter bios to "Former Options Trader." Ethereum's max pain, meanwhile, rests comfortably at $2,050. The universe has a sense of humor, apparently.
For both BTC and ETH, max pain sits below current spot prices. This setup could exert mild upward pressure on both assets — or at least that's the theory. In crypto, "mild" is a word that gets redefined by 3x leverage positions approximately every other Tuesday.
At press time, Bitcoin trades at $72,129, still pretending it's not thinking about $100K like that one friend who "isn't looking for a relationship." Ethereum hovers around $2,215, doing Ethereum things. Trading volume for both ticked up modestly — BTC up 7.6%, ETH up 9.4% — because apparently, even expiry Fridays require warm-up sets.
The BTC put/call ratio is 0.72, with calls loaded above spot — bulls are stacking calls like they're collecting Pokémon cards. ETH's put/call ratio sits at 0.77 — calls outweigh puts in open interest, though the last 24 hours of volume ran put-heavy. Translation: traders are positioning for upside, but some are also hedging their bets near-term, because in crypto, even optimism comes with a hedge fund internship.
