Arizona's Quixotic Crusade Against Kalshi Just Got Body-Slammed by a Federal Judge

In a plot twist no one saw coming—except maybe everyone on Kalshi's legal team—a federal judge has temporarily hit the pause button on Arizona's ambitious quest to throw prediction market provider Kalshi in the slammer. The Grand Canyon State apparently thought it could rebrand financial forecasting as illegal gambling, but the judge had other ideas.

District Judge Michael Liburdi, serving justice in the Land of Arizona, ruled Friday that the state cannot proceed with its Monday, April 13 arraignment of Kalshi like some kind of Wild West show trial. Arizona had grandiosely announced plans to file 20 criminal charges against Kalshi for the audacity of offering what the state colorfully described as "betting products" that allegedly violated state law. Someone really should have explained the difference between a derivative contract and a trip to Vegas before drafting those charges.

"Defendants are temporarily restrained and enjoined from enforcing AZ's gambling laws in any criminal or civil enforcement actions to any contracts listed on CFTC-regulated [designated contract markets],'' Judge Liburdi decreed in what might be the most consequential temporary restraining order to ever come out of the District of Arizona. The judge basically told Arizona to take a chill pill and let the adults in Washington handle this one.
