From Gray Box to Cannes: The $70M Bitcoin Film That Proves Hollywood Loves AI More Than Satoshi

Picture this: a $70 million Bitcoin thriller starring Gal Gadot, Casey Affleck, Isla Fisher, and Pete Davidson is about to hit the market—and the production team decided AI should do most of the work. Because why hire location scouts when you can just ask a neural network to imagine the world?

"Bitcoin: Killing Satoshi," directed by Doug Liman, tracks a worldwide manhunt for Bitcoin's enigmatic creator across roughly 200 locations. The catch? Not a single scene was shot on location. The entire production lived inside a former car showroom wrapped in a gray screen—hence the nickname "the gray box." AI generated all the settings and lighting, while actors' performances were captured and then digitally stitched into the scenes. It's like building a virtual world while sitting in what basically amounts to a very expensive waiting room.

"We budgeted out what it would be to do it practically, and it was over $300 million," producer Ryan Kavanaugh told The Wrap. "We realized we could bring down the cost by utilizing some of the AI tools out there." Translation: they looked at the bill, fainted, and decided that AI-generated backdrops were the answer to their prayers. Satoshi would probably appreciate the irony—Bitcoin was created to cut out financial middlemen, and now Hollywood is cutting out location scouts.

The film will be shopped to buyers at Cannes next week—a timing that conveniently aligns with renewed interest in Bitcoin's creator identity. A recent New York Times exposé named Blockstream CEO Adam Back as the prime suspect, which he denied, calling it "coincidence and similar phrases from people with similar experience." So basically, someone said "Adam Back" and he responded with "lmao no."

Bitcoin recently traded around $74,900, up 0.7% in the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, the film industry continues to prove that when it comes to embracing new technology, Hollywood has no problem going all-in—just maybe not on actually filming outdoors.
