Visa Joins the Validator Set: From Swiping Cards to Staking Nodes

In a move that’s equal parts inevitable and mildly surreal, Visa has officially upgraded from processing card payments to running blockchain nodes. The payments giant announced it’s now an 'anchor validator' on Stripe’s Tempo blockchain—yes, that Stripe—after six months of behind-the-scenes noodling with Tempo’s engineers. Apparently, the corporate pivot has officially been upgraded from "blockchain" to "actually touching the chain ourselves."

No, they’re not launching a stablecoin (yet). No, they’re not going full cypherpunk. But yes, they are now deep in the crypto trenches, running the infrastructure in-house like they’ve been training for this their whole life. No more half-measures or careful API integrations—just straight into the validator mines, pickaxe in hand, ready to mine those transaction fees like it’s 2017.

Cuy Sheffield, head of Visa’s crypto team and professional blockchain enthusiast, said the goal isn’t just decentralization for the sake of LinkedIn clout. It’s about enabling next-gen payment flows—specifically, AI agents paying each other without human supervision. Because apparently, the future is machines buying API calls from other machines, and Visa wants in on the action. Robots paying robots while humans watch from the sidelines, probably still arguing about gas fees.

Enter Tempo’s Machine Payments Protocol (MPP), live since last month and backed by Stripe and Paradigm. Visa didn’t just show up with a lunchbox—they helped design the MPP card spec and even launched Visa CLI, a wallet letting AI agents spend like it’s crypto Black Friday. Finally, a CLI wallet that won't judge you for not using a hardware wallet.

Sheffield remains coy about Visa launching its own stablecoin. 'It’s so early and the rules haven’t even been written yet,' he said, likely while side-eyeing the OCC. But don’t count it out. After all, Visa’s been 'living and breathing stablecoins' for seven years. At this point, they probably dream in USDC. Stablecoins at this point are basically their love language.

And Tempo is just the warm-up. Visa’s also prepping to join the Canton Network as a '
