Kraken's Awkward Support Staff Snafu: Extortionists Want Gold, Exchange Says No Thanks

Ah, the classic "we have your data and we'll release it if you don't pay up" routine. Except in this case, crypto exchange Kraken basically responded with a shrug and a firm "nah." The Wyoming-based exchange is currently navigating an extortion attempt after a criminal group threatened to drop videos showing they had gotten their hands on access to internal systems containing client data. Because apparently, in 2024, even a support ticket can become a Hollywood thriller.

In the first incident dating back to last February, Kraken caught wind of a video floating around on a criminal forum—because of course that's where one would post such a thing. Internal investigations swung into action, identified the culprit, revoked their access like a parent taking away a child's WiFi privileges, and implemented additional security controls. The affected clients were notified, because transparency is cool, or whatever.

The second incident followed a suspiciously similar pattern, because apparently some people didn't get the memo the first time around. Kraken once again spotted the responsible party, terminated their access faster than you can say "rug pull," and notified impacted users. You'd think after the first time, they'd have learned.

For those keeping score at home, approximately 2,000 client accounts were potentially viewed across both incidents. That's 0.02% of Kraken's millions of customers—basically the crypto equivalent of finding a single grain of rice in a swimming pool. Not that it makes it okay, but hey, perspective.

"Our systems were never breached; funds were never at risk; we will not pay these criminals; we will not ever negotiate with bad actors," said Nick Percoco, chief security and information officer of Payward and Kraken. It's the crypto equivalent of "I don't know her" except actually true, and delivered with significantly more confidence.

Shortly after the latest access was cut off, Kraken started receiving those fun little extortion demands we all love to hate. The group threatened to distribute materials from both incidents to media outlets and on social media. Kraken's response? A
