Kraken's Support Team Got a Little Too Helpful—Two Insiders, 2K Accounts, and a Shakedown That Flopped

Kraken just had one of those weeks where the drama comes from inside the house. You know, the kind where you're not even surprised anymore because apparently trusting people with sensitive data is just a hardcore difficulty setting in this industry.

The US-based exchange confirmed it was hit with an extortion attempt following two separate insider-related incidents. No breach, no funds at risk—just some rogue employees who apparently thought they'd try their hand at crypto crime. Because apparently the 47,000% APY degens weren't the only ones gambling this quarter.

The latest episode involved a support team member who apparently couldn't resist peeking at data for roughly 2,000 client accounts. That's roughly 0.02% of Kraken's user base, for those doing the math. Yes, we're all doing the math. No, we're not impressed.

Kraken says access was limited to client support data, systems were never actually breached, and customer funds stayed exactly where they should be—safely out of reach. Which is honestly the only thing that matters here, but still.

The whole thing started back in February 2025 when Kraken got a tip about a video floating around on a criminal forum showing someone accessing client support systems. The exchange tracked it down to a support team member, yanked their access immediately, tightened up security controls, and notified affected customers. You know, the standard "oops our employee went full rogue" protocol.

But because apparently one rogue employee wasn't enough, a second video surfaced with similar activity. Kraken identified another support team member, terminated access, and sent out notifications to a small number of impacted clients. Two employees, two videos, zero brain cells. Classic.

Shortly after cutting off access the second time, the same criminal group came calling with extortion demands, threatening to dump material from both incidents to media and social platforms. Ah yes, the classic "give us money or we'll post memes about this" threat. Very intimidating.

Kraken's response? Hard pass. No negotiations, no payments. The exchange basically said "we're not playing that game" and meant it. Refreshing, honestly.

The exchange says it's been coordinating with industry partners and federal law enforcement across multiple jurisdictions to investigate what it describes as broader insider recruitment efforts targeting crypto, gaming, and telecommunications companies. So apparently someone's out here recruiting insiders like they're building a fantasy football team, but with worse prizes.

Kraken believes it's gathered enough intel to help identify and arrest those responsible, but isn't sharing further details while the investigation remains active. Because nothing says
