From Pennies to a Buck: The Day Bitcoin Finally Said 'GM' to Dollar Parity

By our Markets Desk2 min read

Fifteen years ago this week, Bitcoin pulled off what many thought was impossible—hitting that magical $1 mark. Picture it: the asset your mom's friend's nephew kept yapping about at Thanksgiving finally decided to stop being cheaper than a parking meter. Revolutionary times, truly.

On April 13, 2011, BTC was hovering around $0.92 to $0.93. Just months earlier, in February 2011, Bitcoin had touched parity with the U.S. dollar for the first time ever. But skeptics didn't have to wait long to gloat. By March, the price had crashed back down to $0.80. Naysayers were quick to declare Bitcoin would never see a dollar again. "Wen $1?" they asked, dripping with condescension. Turns out, "wen" was approximately 42 days later.

Then came April 14, 2011. Bitcoin climbed to $0.99, crossed the $1 threshold, and left the doubters eating their words. The celebration was probably just some neckbeard in a BitcoinTalk thread typing "WE MADE IT" in all caps while the rest of the world continued scrolling past. History is written by the early adopters, and they're mostly sleep-deprived and holding too much pizza-related crypto.

The rally was just getting started. Bitcoin tripled that same month, closing April 2011 at $3.44—a 335.3% gain in 30 days. If your 401k did that, your company's HR department would probably assume you were running a Ponzi scheme. But this was just Bitcoin being Bitcoin, casually reminding everyone that volatility isn't a bug—it's a feature that prints Lambos for some and sleep-depriving regret for others.

For the full year, BTC went from $0.29 in January to $4.58 by December. Mid-2011 brought an even crazier run, pushing Bitcoin to $26.15—an 8,917% increase from its January price. Yes, you read that correctly. Eight thousand, nine hundred and seventeen percent. Somewhere, a guy who sold at $0.80 to "lock in profits" is still in therapy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to him.

The journey from zero was long. Bitcoin launched in 2009 with
