Kevin Warsh Confirmation Advances as Senator Tillis Withdraws Opposition

President Donald Trump has nominated Kevin Warsh to replace Jerome Powell as Federal Reserve Chairman, with Powell's current term expiring in May. Warsh's nomination now moves forward following the removal of a significant obstacle in the Senate confirmation process.

Republican Senator Thom Tillis, who had been one of the most critical figures in Warsh's confirmation battle, has withdrawn his opposition and announced his support for the nominee. Tillis had previously cited the Department of Justice investigation into the Federal Reserve and Powell as the reason for his resistance to Warsh's nomination.

In a post on X, Senator Tillis stated that the DOJ has concluded its investigation into Chairman Jerome Powell. He explained that the investigation, which centered on the renovation of Fed buildings, represented a potential threat to the independence of the Federal Reserve. "We couldn't consider supporting it before the investigation was concluded," Tillis said, calling the inquiry an "attack on the Fed's independence."

Tillis's opposition had represented the most significant hurdle to Warsh's confirmation, as a single senator has the power to prevent a nomination vote from moving forward. With his change in position, the path for Warsh to become Fed Chairman appears significantly clearer.
