Aave Proposes Suspending $AAVE Buybacks After rsETH Security Breach
Aave finds itself at one of those delightful governance crossroads that DeFi is famous for—where perfectly reasonable treasury decisions get held hostage by someone else's bridge getting rekt. TokenLogic, a service provider quietly keeping the lights on within the Aave ecosystem, has submitted a proposal to temporarily suspend the $AAVE token buyback program starting April 19, 2026. The move comes as risk management measures expand across the DeFi ecosystem in response to the crisis. The proposal is set to go to a community vote, with the polling period scheduled to begin on April 28, 2026.
Here's the thing about bridges: they work great until they don't. On April 18, KelpDAO's LayerZero-based rsETH bridge became the latest exhibit in the ongoing gallery of cross-chain vulnerabilities. Following the incident, "uncollateralized rsETH" inflows were detected across multiple chains on the Aave protocol. In response, protocol administrators froze rsETH and wrsETH reserves and implemented various adjustments to WETH interest rates as part of containment efforts. Because when your collateral turns shady, the only move is to freeze everything and figure it out later.
According to TokenLogic, the full scope of the incident remains unclear—which, honestly, is the standard state of affairs for the first 48 hours after any exploit. Questions persist around how losses from the rsETH exploit will be distributed, how much capital can be recovered, and what role Aave DAO might need to play in any potential resolution. The uncertainty has prompted a cautious approach to treasury management during this period.
The core argument for the suspension centers on maintaining financial flexibility—because nobody wants to be in a position where they're buying back governance tokens while the DAO is being asked to bail out a bridge. TokenLogic emphasized that directing protocol revenue toward buybacks during this uncertainty could undermine the DAO's capacity to contribute to a potential rescue plan. The $AAVE buyback program will remain on hold until the rsETH crisis uncertainties are resolved, with any relaunch dependent on future community assessments.
