Bitcoin Drops 4% as Microsoft's Majorana 2 Chip Reignites Quantum Fears

By our Markets Desk1 min read

Bitcoin is down 4% today as a fresh quantum computing development from Microsoft drags one of crypto's most consequential long-term debates back into the spotlight. The usual questions resurface: are quantum machines becoming dangerous, and will the industry be ready when they finally are? Historically, the answer to the second part has been "eventually, probably, maybe."

At its annual Build conference, Microsoft unveiled Majorana 2, a topological quantum chip it describes as 1,000 times more reliable than its predecessor, with average qubit lifetimes of 20 seconds and peak lifetimes approaching one minute. For the record, your hardware wallet's seed phrase has been sitting on a Post-it note for longer than that, and somehow it still feels less exposed.

"Announced today at #MSBuild: Microsoft unveiled Majorana 2, a next-generation topological quantum chip developed with the help of Microsoft Discovery's agentic AI," the company posted on X. Satoshi's legacy, meet your first plausible long-term threat that isn't a bored teenager with a GPU farm.
